THE MULTIPLE PERSONALITY DISORDERED GOD

Psalm 102:25-27

Introduction: I am troubled when I here people say, “We all worship the same God” in an attempt to justify religious denominationalism. I am troubled by this statement because it indicts God as having multiple personalities. The religious world is divided doctrinally. For anyone to say that all religions worship the same God is to suggest that he is a different personality for each religious body. I say this because each religious body is different. They all profess to be following the same God, yet all are going in different directions. Why would God tell this different religious groups different things; this is contradictory to His own stated will (John 17:21). He would contradict that which He inspired the disciples to preach and teach (1 Cor. 1:10). Such would surely suggest that God even contradicts Himself (Mal. 3:6). In other words, if it is true that we all worship and follow the same God, then God is out of His mind.

A.     I do not believe that God is out of His mind

B.     This lesson will clearly establish that we all do not worship and follow the same God

I.                    MPD?

A.     Not Schizophrenia – a brain disorder due to a chemical imbalance resulting in a detachment or distortion of reality (sight, sound, smell, touch, etc.)

B.     MPD – a single person compartmentalizes different personalities that act independently of each other and bear particular independent characteristics that often contradict or are the antithesis of the other personalities (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) – often the result of a traumatic episode

II.                 The Personality of God as described in the Scriptures

A.     He is consistent and unchanging

1.      He does nothing for which he has to alter His personality (Num. 23:19)

2.      He is always the same (Heb. 13:8)

3.      He does not change (compare with the sun – James 1:17) – Variation (astronomical term used to refer to the changing of position of the planets)

B.     He has declared his position on salvation

1.      Believe (John 8:24, Acts 16:31)

2.      Repent (Luke 13:3, 1 Cor. 7:10)

3.      Confess (Matt. 10:32-33, Rom. 10:9-10)

4.      Be baptized (Mark 16:16, 1 Pet. 3:21)

5.      Endure (Matt. 10:22)

C.     He had declared his position of the church

1.      There is one (Eph. 4:4, 1:22-23)

2.      There is one faith (Eph. 4:5)

3.      One body of doctrine (Jude 3, 2 John 9)

4.      Those in the body are to be united (Eph. 4:3,  13-14)

D.    He has declared his position of worship (John 4:24)

1.      Singing (Eph. 5:19)

2.      Praying (Eph. 6:18)

3.      Lord Supper (1 Cor. 11:24-26)

4.      Contribution (1 Cor. 16:1-2)

5.      Preaching  and teaching (1 Tim. 4:11-16)

III.               If men right when they say we all worship and follow the same God, then what God declares through the Scriptures to be the particulars of personality are a lie (Titus 1:1-2)

A.     Different religious bodies disagree on what a person needs to do to be saved

B.     Different religious bodies disagree as to the work, nature and name of the church

C.     Different religious bodies disagree as to what constitutes proper and acceptable worship

Conclusion: No we are not all following the same God. The God of Scripture has stated His position on salvation, the church, worship and He does not change. If anything, most in these religious bodies are following a God of their own devising (Rom. 1:18-23). God does not suffer from multiple personality disorder. Men alter God to fit their multiple personalities (looking for a church home). Let us be content to accept God as He truly is.
