The Midtown church of Christ is composed of a congregation of
Christians, who have come together for the purpose of doing God’s
will. Each of us were at one time lost sinners, separated from God (Eph.
2:1-13). After realizing we were sinners and learning of God’s
provisions in the cross (Rom. 5:6-11), each of us had obeyed the gospel
of Christ (Rom. 6:17). We heard the gospel preached (Rom. 10:17);
believed on Christ, based upon God’s word (Heb. 11:6); repented of our
trespasses and sins (Luke 13:3); confessed Jesus Christ as Lord (Rom.
10:9-10), and were baptized for the forgiveness of
our sins (Acts 2:38). Having been baptized, we were added to the
glorious body of Christ (Acts 2:41; Cor. 12:13). The body of Christ is
the universal church made up of all baptized, repentant, believers in
the Lord, Jesus Christ (Eph. 1:22-23). Jesus is our head. That means,
Jesus is our one and only authority (Col. 3:17). Since Jesus is the head
of the church over all things, we must get His approval for everything
we do (Matt. 17:5; Jer. 10:23). God has given us a New Covenant and has
done away with the Old (Heb. 8:6-12; Rom. 7:1-6; Eph. 2:15; Col.
2:14-17). Thus, all of our practices must be based upon the words of
Christ and those whom he had inspired, and not Moses or any of the Old
Testament prophets (Heb. 1:1-2). We are called upon to live pure,
faithful and holy lives before God (Tit. 1:15-16; James 1:27; 2 Pet.
3:11-14, 1 Cor. 15:58; Rev. 2:10).
OUR
PURPOSE AS A LOCAL CHURCH
As a local congregation of God’s people we are identified as
"church of Christ" (Rom. 16:16). This is because we belong to
Christ (Mat. 16:18; Acts 20:28). Each member is called a
"Christian" or "saint" because that is how the
people of God were identified in Scripture (Acts 11:26; Col. 1:2). As
Christians we have come together for the purpose that Peter stated in 1
Peter 2:9, "To show forth the praises of Him . . ." The
Lord has given us, in His word, everything we need to praise and glorify
Him and to be pleasing in His sight (2 Tim. 3:16,17; 2 Pet. 1:3).
According to God’s word, as a congregation we must come together to
remember Christ’s death each Lord’s day (Acts 20:7; 1 Cor.
11:20-29). You may also have noticed from the previous passages that the
church’s business is neither social nor recreational, but spiritual.
Upon the same day as we partake of the Lord’s supper, we take up a
collection by giving according to our incomes (1 Cor. 16:1-2; 2 Cor.
9:6,7). There is no authority for any other fund-raising activities. We
praise God with our voices through singing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16). We
offer God our prayers (1 The. 5:17). We are also built up through
preaching and teaching (Matt. 28:20; Acts 20:7). Our mission is to
preach the glorious gospel to a dying world and to be lights leading
folk out of darkness (Mark 16:15-16; Matt. 5:13-16). Our hope, when this
life is over, is to be with Jesus in the resurrection when He returns on
the last day (John 6:54; John 14:1-4; 1 Cor. 15:20-26; ). |
