Series – Joy and Pain: Finding God’s Goodness in Difficult Times
Joy and Sorrow
Pastor Susie Gamez
Main Text: 2 Corinthians 7:8-10 (NIV)
8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
I Don’t Like Storms
Biblical Background: In the Book of 2 Corinthians, Paul is feeling both Joy and Sorrow over a church that He loves. They are being Deceived and Divided by false teachers.
Biblical Joy: A Joy that comes from the Lord, not simply the human heart. A joy that comes from knowing, experiencing, and trusting the fellowship of Christ’s suffering and the power of His resurrection. Expressing God’s goodness. (Not Worldly Joy)
Biblical Sorrow: Deep distress, sadness, or regret especially for the loss of someone or something loved. This can be physical, emotional, or spiritual loss. (Not Worldly Sorrow)
How Do You Handle Relational Storms with People You Love? (Relational Joy and Pain)
1.) Depend on God’s Love in Every Relationship
2.) Decide to Receive God’s Grace in Conflicts
3.) Declare Who the Real Enemy Is
