Series – HOPE – When you want to quit on God

Don’t Give Up Hope: Something to Keep You from Quitting
Dr. Erem Smith

Main Text: Genesis 32:24-30 (NIV)

So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled with him till daybreak. 25 When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob’s hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for it is daybreak.”

But Jacob replied, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

27 The man asked him, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

28 Then the man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.”

29 Jacob said, “Please tell me your name.”

But he replied, “Why do you ask my name?” Then he blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, “It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared.”

“Don’t Ever Give Up”

Biblical Background: Jacob (Israel)- A Deceiver Who Finds Hope in the Divine (God)

  • Biblical Hope (Hebrews 11:1) Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
  • Hope in God

How to Live a Hope-filled Life

1.) Recognize Your Brokenness (Genesis 27)

2.) Realize God is With You (Genesis 32:1)

Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

3.) Wrestle with God as Long as It Takes (Genesis 32:24-30)

Final Thought: Hold Up! What are you Holding on to?

(Psalm 42:5)

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.
