WHY CHURCH? — THE BUILDING OF BELOVED COMMUNITY
Dr. Efrem Smith
Biblical Foundation
- Ephesians 2
- God takes what is old, worn, and broken and brings renewal.
- The church is part of God’s renewal plan—a community where people experience new life, new community, and new citizenship.
- A member of Midtown Church is a lover and follower of Christ who has chosen to covenant with this local body by committing to spiritual growth, serving, generosity, and accountability.
Question of the Sermon:
How does renewal operate in the church, and how do we participate?
1. NEW LIFE
- Ephesians 2:1–10
- God brings us from death to life through Christ.
- Renewal begins with what God does in us.
2. NEW COMMUNITY
- Ephesians 2:11–18
- Christ breaks down barriers and brings people together.
- The church is a community built through reconciliation.
3. NEW CITIZENSHIP
- Ephesians 2:19–22
- We are no longer strangers and outsiders, but members of God’s household.
- We belong to something bigger than ourselves.
Final Thought: NEW REALIZED
- Ephesians 4:11–16
- Renewal is realized through Redemption, Reconciliation, and Restoration.
- The church continues to grow as we grow in Christ and help others grow.
