Hold On to Hope
Pastor Tyronne Gross Jr.
Main Text: Romans 5:1-5 (NIV)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Biblical Background: Paul is Writing to a Church in Need of Hope in Christ and Hope for Unity (Reconciliation to God and One Another)
- Biblical Hope: A confident expectation and desire for what is to come. A belief that something good will come regardless of your current circumstance. Hope in God. Believing God ultimately provides the hope, not me. Hope as supernatural; doesn’t come naturally to us. Hope is about what God is doing and will do.
Hebrews 11:1
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Where We Find Our Hope:
1.) We Find Hope in the Gospel (Romans 1:14-17)
I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
2.) We Find Hope in God’s Grace (Romans 5:1-2)
Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
3.) We Find Hope (Even) in Suffering (Romans 5:3-5)
Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
Final Thought: Our Hope Is Built on Nothing Less Than Jesus Christ Our Righteousness (Romans 5:6-11)
You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.
