Series- Matters of the Heart: God’s Love for the Church and the World

What is Required of You?
Pastor Bob Balian

Main Text: Micah 6:2-8 (NASB)

Listen, you mountains, to the indictment by the Lord,
And you enduring foundations of the earth,
Because the Lord has a case against His people;
And He will dispute with Israel.
My people, what have I done to you,
And how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
Indeed, I brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I redeemed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
My people, remember now
What Balak king of Moab planned
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And what happened from Shittim to Gilgal,
So that you might know the righteous acts of the Lord.”

With what shall I come to the Lord
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
Does the Lord take pleasure in thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give Him my firstborn for my wrongdoings,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has told you, mortal one, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?

“How Do Love, Justice, Mercy, and Humility Work Together?”

Matthew 22:34-39 (NASB)

But when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him:36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’38 This is the great and foremost commandment.39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

Micah 6:2-7 (NASB)

Listen, you mountains, to the indictment by the Lord,
And you enduring foundations of the earth,
Because the Lord has a case against His people;
And He will dispute with Israel.
3 My people, what have I done to you,
And how have I wearied you? Answer Me.
4 Indeed, I brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I redeemed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
5 My people, remember now
What Balak king of Moab planned
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And what happened from Shittim to Gilgal,
So that you might know the righteous acts of the Lord.”

6 With what shall I come to the Lord
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?
7 Does the Lord take pleasure in thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give Him my firstborn for my wrongdoings,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

Micah 6:8 (NASB)

He has told you, mortal one, what is good;
And what does the Lord require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?

WHAT ARE THE 3 THINGS THAT GOD REQUIRES AS DEMONSTRATION OF LOVING NEIGHBOR AS SELF?

1.) DO JUSTICE

Isaiah 58:3

Why have we fasted,’ they say, ‘and you have not seen it?
Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’”

Isaiah 58:5-7

Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves?
Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes?
Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injusticeand untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free
and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry
and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter—when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?

2.) LOVE KINDNESS (OR MERCY)

3.) WALK HUMBLY
