Series: The Church Beyond the Building
“Building Generous Disciples”
Pastor Bob Balian
Main Text: 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (NIV)
4 things that generosity is:
1.) Premeditated (Ephesians 5: 15-17)
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.
5 things we can do with our money:
1 – spend it (me first)
2 – repay debt (me second)
3 – pay taxes (government third)
4 – save it (me fourth)
5 – give it (others last)
2.) Calculated (Luke 21:1-4)
As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
3.) Designated (2 Corinthians 9: 10-12)
Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
12 This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.
4.) Emancipated (2 Corinthians 9:7)
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
