Sermon Series: Don’t Save Me: Good News for Skeptics
How Hypocrisy Hurts the Church (And Hinders the Good News)
Pastor Otis Amey

Sacramento, We Have a Problem!

Biblical Background: Christ calls believers to move from a life that’s a religious performance to one that’s about a righteous purpose.

How Do I Become a Stepping Stone & Not a Stumbling Block?

1.) By Practicing What We Preach

By the grace of God, there should be things that we no longer do!

Matthew 23:1-3 (NIV)

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: “The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach.

Luke 2:49 (NKJV)

And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?”

2.) By Putting Justice Over Judgement

Matthew 25:31-40 (NIV)

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

We Become Stepping Stones By Discipling Out Hypocrisy

Homework: The 3 Types of Hypocrisy I Must Deal With

  • Toward Others – the standard you hold for yourself vs. the one you hold for others
  • Toward Self – what you say, think or believe vs what you do
  • Toward God – what you say vs what GOD says

We have to follow the Word & not the waves, because the waves will have us doing whatever’s current.
